Pineapple is a true superfruit. It contains various valuable minerals such as potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron and, bromelain, an enzyme of the group Cysteine Proteases, which are mainly used for the breakdown of proteins.

Initially originating from Paraguay and Southern Brazil, pineapples are presently grown in tropical regions worldwide, with a significant emphasis on East Asia. Thailand and the Philippines contribute about one-third of the world’s pineapple production and are renowned for their use in fruit-based beverages.

It was the Greek restaurateur Sam Panopoulos (1934-2017) who in 1962 first put pineapple on a pizza and invented the Pizza Hawaii in Chatham, Ontario, Canada.

The name “Pizza Hawaii” comes from the addition à la Hawaii referring to Hawaii as one of the best cultivation areas for pineapple. As a matter of fact, Hawaiians are pretty conservative regarding their pizza toppings and most of them would not put pineapple on their pizza.

Despite the fruit’s lack of any botanical or taste-related connection to pine trees, the name persisted, and it became the widely accepted term for this delicious tropical fruit.
